Pigments and dyes are core colorants widely used in global manufacturing, coating, textile and printing industries. Though both serve the fundamental purpose of coloring materials, they differ greatly in chemical properties, coloring principles and application characteristics. Meanwhile, the two colorants also have obvious application overlaps, making them indispensable and complementary in modern industrial production.
The core distinction lies in solubility and coloring mechanisms. Dyes are soluble in water or organic solvents. They penetrate the interior of substrates such as textiles, paper and leather, forming stable chemical combinations with materials to achieve uniform and vivid coloring with strong permeability. In contrast, pigments are insoluble fine particulate solids. They attach to the surface of substrates physically through adhesion, covering the material surface to realize coloring. Pigments feature outstanding light resistance, weather resistance and color stability, far exceeding most dyes in outdoor and high-temperature usage scenarios.
Despite the clear differences, pigments and dyes share extensive overlapping application fields. The textile industry is the most typical overlapping scenario, where both are used for fabric coloring and pattern printing. Dyes are applied for integral dyeing of garment fabrics, while pigments are widely used for textile screen printing and special surface color modification. In the coating and ink industry, both colorants are adopted to adjust paint and ink hues for architectural coatings, printing inks and industrial finishing materials.
Additionally, both colorants are commonly used in plastic, rubber and paper manufacturing to enrich product color diversity and enhance aesthetic value. With the upgrading of industrial color technology, the boundary between the two is gradually blurred. Manufacturers often combine pigments and dyes to balance coloring vividness, durability and cost, meeting diverse market demands and bringing broader development space for the global colorant industry.
