U.S. thermal coal exports fell nearly 20% month-on-month to 2.8 million tonnes in May, while average CIF ARA prices hit a record high, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and S&P Global Commodity Insights.
Thermal coal accounted for 41.8% of total U.S. coal exports in the most recent month.Year-to-date, U.S. thermal energy exports are down 3.6% from a year earlier.Average monthly CIF ARA prices rose to an all-time high of $327.88/t in May, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights’ Platts assessment.
The sharp decline in thermal energy exports was due to lower shipments of bituminous and sub-bituminous coal.Bituminous coal exports fell 17.6% MoM and 21.4% YoY to 2.4mt.Year-to-date, bituminous coal exports are down 5.6% from the 2021 period.Sub-bituminous coal exports fell 27.1% to 366,344 tonnes in May, similar to the trend of bituminous coal exports.Compared with the same period last year, sub-bituminous coal exports increased by 1.4%.Year-to-date sub-bituminous coal exports are up 8.8% from the same period in 2021.
Unlike thermal coal, metallurgical coal exports rose slightly in May to 3.9mt.The transaction volume increased by 1.4% month-on-month and 6.8% year-on-year.Coal exports hit a seven-month high.Met coal accounted for 58.2% of total U.S. coal exports in May.Low-volatility FOB USEC metallurgical coal prices fell to $462.52/tonne in May from an all-time high of $508.91/tonne two months ago.
Meteorological and thermal energy exports totaled 6.7 million tons, down 8.5% month-on-month and 2.6% year-on-year.Year-to-date total coal exports were 1.7% higher than a year earlier.
Exports of calcined and green petroleum coke in May rose 7% MoM to 3.3mt, up 20.3% YoY.Year-to-date petroleum coke exports totaled 15.3 million tonnes, an increase of 11.7% from January 2021 to May 2021.
The growth in pet coke exports was driven by more shipments of fuel-grade pet coke.The export volume of uncalcined petroleum coke increased by 9.6% month-on-month and 22.7% year-on-year to 3 million tons.Year-to-date, green petcoke exports were 13.9 million tonnes, up 12.1% from 2021.According to S&P Global’s Platts assessment data, the average price of petroleum coke at FOB USGC 6.5% in May was $185.50/t.
On the other hand, the export volume of calcined petroleum coke decreased by 9.7% MoM to 319,078 tons.Compared with the same period last year, calcined petroleum coke shipments increased by 1.7%.Year-to-date, anode-grade petroleum coke exports rose 7.4% from 2021 to 1.5 million tonnes in May 2022.
