Diatomite (diatomaceous earth) is a soft, lightweight siliceous sedimentary rock formed from the fossilized remains of ancient aquatic diatoms—single-celled algae with silica shells. Composed primarily of non-crystalline silica (SiO₂, 80%–90%), with minor alumina, iron oxide, and organic matter, it features a unique microporous structure, high porosity (up to 90%), large specific surface area, strong adsorption capacity, chemical inertness, and heat resistance. As a non-toxic, eco-friendly mineral, it is widely used in food filtration, water treatment, environmental protection, construction, and industrial fillers.
Raw diatomite is processed via crushing, drying, grinding, and purification (washing, magnetic separation, calcination) to remove clay, quartz, and iron impurities. High-purity grades have SiO₂ ≥85%, whiteness ≥85%, low Fe₂O₃ (<1.5%), and controlled particle size (10–200 μm), ensuring consistent performance in filtration, adsorption, and functional filling.
Core Advantage 1: Precision Filtration & Adsorption (Largest Traditional Use)
Diatomite’s uniform micropores (0.1–10 μm) make it an ideal filter aid, capturing fine particles while allowing liquid flow.
- Food & Beverage: Clarifies beer, wine, juice, and syrup by removing yeast, bacteria, and suspended solids, improving clarity and shelf life.
- Water Treatment: Removes heavy metals (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺), organic pollutants, and odors from industrial wastewater, municipal water, and swimming pools.
- Pharmaceuticals: Filters antibiotics, oral liquids, and biological products for sterile purification.
Core Advantage 2: Eco-Friendly Building Materials (Fast-Growing Application)
Diatomite’s porous structure enables moisture regulation, air purification, sound insulation, and heat preservation.
- Diatom Mud (Wall Coatings): Absorbs/releases moisture to prevent mold, adsorbs formaldehyde, benzene, and VOCs, and reduces noise—known as a “breathable wall”.
- Lightweight Insulation: Used in thermal bricks, insulation boards, and refractory linings for high-temperature resistance (up to 1400°C) and low thermal conductivity.
Core Advantage 3: High-Performance Functional Filler
As a reinforcing filler, it enhances mechanical properties and processability in polymers.
- Paints & Coatings: Improves durability, scratch resistance, and matte finish; reduces settling.
- Rubber & Plastics: Boosts rigidity, heat resistance, and dimensional stability; reduces cost.
- Agriculture: Absorbs pesticides/fertilizers for slow release; acts as a natural insecticide by damaging pest exoskeletons.
