Volcanic rock (lava rock or pumice) is a kind of glass lava with dense pores, which is formed by the rapid cooling of magma in the process of volcanic eruption and the rapid escape and expansion of internal gas due to the sharp decrease of pressure. The pore volume accounts for more than 50% of the rock volume. It is called pumice because it has many pores, light weight and can float on the water surface. It is characterized by high strength, heat preservation, heat insulation, sound absorption, fire prevention, acid and alkali resistance, corrosion resistance, and no pollution, no radioactivity, etc.
Characteristic
Appearance and shape: no sharp particles, small resistance to water flow, not easy to block, uniform water and air distribution, rough surface, fast film hanging speed, microbial film is not easy to fall off when repeatedly washed.
Porosity: volcanic rock is a natural honeycomb porous, is the best growth environment for bacterial micelles.

Biochemical stability: volcanic rock biofilter is corrosion-resistant, inert, and does not participate in biochemical reaction of biofilm in the environment.
Surface electricity and hydrophilicity: volcanic rock biofilter has positive charge on its surface, which is conducive to the growth of microorganisms. It has strong hydrophilicity, a large amount of attached biofilm and a fast speed.
In terms of the influence on the activity of biofilm: as the carrier of biofilm, the volcanic rock biofilter has no harmful and inhibitory effect on the fixed microorganism, which has been proved not to affect the activity of microorganism in practice.
